BitRock InstallBuilder 3.5 Released - Includes support for Solaris on Intel and IRIX

Monday, 30 January 2006

BitRock announced today the release of BitRock InstallBuilder 3.5. The development tool turns the application packaging, distribution and deployment process of multiplatform applications into a fast, easy and cost effective task for independent software vendors and custom application developers. The new version includes native support for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, HP-UX, AIX, Solaris, FreeBSD and IRIX.

Using BitRock InstallBuilder allows developers to quickly package their software, so they have more time for their primary development tasks. The ability to build installers for all supported platforms from one project file allows for easy maintenance and updating of installers. Erik Swan, Chief Technical Splunker of Splunk, a San Francisco-based software startup, elaborated on the benefits of this feature, "Now that we have moved to using BitRock InstallBuilder, our build/test capital needs have been reduced by 75% and the overhead in build/packaging for a dozen platforms is trivial. I now type in a command and I get installers that work on all of the platforms I need to support. BitRock's installer was a lifesaver, dramatically cutting down out build/release times."

BitRock InstallBuilder combines robust functionality with a very easy to use interface that allows for rapid development and painless integration with in-house build systems. Developers can use GUI, human-friendly XML, or command line interfaces to quickly develop native, self-contained installers that do not require bundling a Java runtime or a self-extraction step. Convenient built-in actions automate much of the building process, including auto-detecting a Java Runtime, changing file permissions and ownership, substituting text in a file, adding environment variables, adding directories to the path, creating symbolic links, changing the Windows registry, and launching external scripts. InstallBuilder also includes extensive customization capabilities and support for 16 languages.

A free, fully-functional evaluation of BitRock InstallBuilder is available for download from www.bitrock.com.
