Black Duck Expands Advisory Board With Prominent Industry Executives and Academics

Black Duck Software, the leading provider of software compliance management solutions, today announced that it has expanded its corporate advisory board with seven prominent industry executives and academics. Alex Aiken, Dave Bernstein, Dan Bricklin, Dave Flaschen, Ed Roberts, Jothy Rosenberg and Arthur Tyde have joined Larry Rosen, the noted open source and intellectual property attorney, as industry advisors.

Dr. Alex Aiken is a Professor of Computer Science at Stanford University with a teaching focus on tools for detecting errors and checking specifications of software, identifying and testing open source software, static program analysis and abstract interpretation, constraint resolution algorithms, and language design. He is also the developer of Moss, a system used at thousands of institutions for detecting plagiarism in software. Dr. Aiken was a research staff member at the IBM Almaden Research Center and at UC Berkeley before joining the Stanford faculty in 2003.

Dave Bernstein brings more than 30 years of experience in software development to the advisory board, including more than 20 years as an executive with Rational Software Corporation and IBM. Most recently, Mr. Bernstein drove the creation of the Eclipse Foundation from its beginnings as an IBM consortium. Previously, he served as senior vice president and general manager at Rational, where he was responsible for all product development, product management, product marketing and corporate marketing.

Dan Bricklin is president of Software Garden, Inc. and a lecturer in software licensing concepts and strategies for open source software adoption. He previously founded Trellix Corporation, a provider of web site publishing technology, and co-founded Slate Corporation and also Software Arts, where he was best known for co-developing VisiCalc, the first electronic spreadsheet. Mr. Bricklin is a founding trustee of the Massachusetts Technology Leadership Council and has served on the boards of the Software Publishers Association and the Boston Computer Society.

David Flaschen, is an operating partner of private equity investment firm Castanea Partners and a frequent speaker on corporate governance. He has 20 years of executive experience in the information services industry managing and advising technology companies. Prior to Castanea, Mr. Flaschen was a managing director at Flagship Ventures, and CEO of Thomson Financial and Donnelley Marketing Inc. He has been a director of TripAdvisor, OnExchange and Paychex (PAYX), Inc., as well as several privately held companies.

Dr. Edward Roberts is the David Sarnoff Professor of the Management of Technology and the Chair of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Entrepreneurship Center. Over the past 40 years, Dr. Roberts has become internationally known for his research, teaching and active involvement in many aspects of technology management, including technology strategy, corporate venturing, product innovation management, and technology-based entrepreneurship. When not occupied with his MIT responsibilities, Dr. Roberts has been co-founder, board member and angel investor in many high-tech start-ups including Pugh-Roberts Associates, Medical Information Technology, Inc., Sohu.com, Advanced Magnetics, Interactive Super Computers, and Visible Measures.

Dr. Jothy Rosenberg is a serial entrepreneur and currently the vice president of software for Ambric, Inc. Previously, he founded and served as CEO and CTO of Service Integrity and co-founded GeoTrust, the world’s second largest certificate authority. Prior to GeoTrust, Dr. Rosenberg founded and served as a top executive at a number of other software start-ups, including Factpoint, NovaSoft Systems, and Webspective. He also held several leadership positions at Borland International, including vice president and general manager of the enterprise tools division.

Arthur F. Tyde III is the Chief Technology Officer of The Free Standards Group (FSG), a nonprofit organization dedicated to developing and promoting open source software standards, most notably the Linux Standard Base (LSB). He brings an impressive track record of Linux experience and accomplishments including founding Linuxcare and the Bay Area Linux Users Group. He was recently voted one of the 50 most important people in Linux based on his extensive experience with Linux-based applications and development of the first Linux certification program.
