Boston Software Systems Enables Biometric Authentication With CPOE System
Saturday, 4 March 2006 Boston Software Systems™, the leader in workflow automation technology to the healthcare market, announced today that a prominent health provider in Ohio has integrated Boston WorkStation™ (BWS) with the Novell Modular Authentication Service (NMAS) and Novell Audit to achieve strong authentication compliance with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy Positive Identification regulations. This system can now notify the pharmacy in print and via email if anyone violates this biometric policy and log all events to provide an audit trail. BWS captures order events as they are entered on the Hospital's Computerized Physician Order Entry system (CPOE) and alerts the user to automatically authenticate through the biometric process. The use of biometric fingerprint readers will ensure that any individual involved in dispensing, administering or prescribing drugs is securely authenticated to the CPOE system. If the user is authenticated, the "captured" order is entered. If the user is not authenticated, the "captured" order is not entered and a notification is sent to a supervisor. The Hospital has rolled this system out to 800 workstations and has enrolled 350 members. "Boston WorkStation's integration with Novell's standards-based approach to modular authentication alleviates the time and effort to ensure compliance with the authentication requirement set forth by the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy by three to six months," said Chris Bidleman, director of healthcare solutions at Novell. "The use of biometrics for multi-factor authentication provides customers with strong levels of security and improved accessibility to their systems for authorized users. Capturing these auditable events in Novell Audit from the BWS interface completes the compliance life-cycle." The Ohio State Board of Pharmacy requires strong authentication for electronic access to Order Entry and Pharmacy related applications. After concluding that passwords, traditionally used to authenticate a user's identity, were insufficient, the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy issued new regulations that require computer-based positive identification. Under these new regulations, healthcare organizations must have a system that can determine positive identification for all professionals involved in medication-related procedures. "The CPOE is just one example of a Hospital's forward-thinking approach toward workflow improvements, compliance and patient safety," said Steve Cohen, executive vice president of Boston Software Systems. "Boston WorkStation enables process efficiency through automation and strengthens the critical biometric authentication process. This integration with identity-enabled solutions from Novell and the CPOE solution validates the benefits that Boston WorkStation can provide to application providers in the healthcare industry."
