Cavalier Broadband Selects Procera Networks to Shape, Manage and Control Broadband Internet Access for Commercial and Residential Multi-Tenant Units

Tuesday, 2 January 2007

many of these customers are off-campus University of Virginia students.

Cavalier has worked closely with Procera Networks to develop an intricate set of bandwidth shaping and filtering rules to ensure the quality of service for all users so no one customer's online experience is impacted by a small subset of users that hog available bandwidth. Procera's PacketLogic PL7600 is the key component of a granular shaping and filtering solution that enables Cavalier to ensure that exact amounts of bandwidth availability and transfer speeds are allocated to specific individuals, groups, applications, Peer-2-Peer communications, and FTP transfers. Cavalier has also deployed several blocking rules to stop users attempting to access sites or applications on the internet which could potentially pose threats to the network security or create legal liabilities to the company.

"Simply put, we needed a built-to-order solution without major customization. Procera was the only vendor we've found that was able to provide, or had the foresight to build their product set accordingly. Other vendors tried to find ways to fit us into their solution, which wasn't very effective," said Bob Hamlin, President and CEO of Cavalier Broadband.

"We have evaluated over a dozen different products in the last five years," said Tony Graziano, CTO and Operations Manager for Cavalier Broadband. "At the time we began testing Procera's PacketLogic solution, we owned products from Lucent, Packeteer and Dyband. Within a few days, the decision to turn off and de-install what we were previously using was not a difficult one."

"With functionality like automatic failover, command and control, independent of Procera's DRDL process, PacketLogic is substantially superior to the cumbersome approaches employed by other manufacturers that we have purchased or tried. It was also refreshing that we were not tethered to a specific Operating System (OS) for management and control. Finally, it was a critical requirement to have technical support available during our normal business hours. One vendor wanted us to set our clocks to South Africa time in order to get access to their advanced engineering and support," concludes Graziano.

"Delivering consistent high-levels of broadband services to thousands of power users in an academic environment can be very difficult to maintain. Procera's experience in numerous other higher education deployments around the world enabled us to provide Cavalier with the solution they have been looking for. Cavalier can now deploy numerous new, next-generation traffic management rules like Volume Based Shaping (VBS) to control bandwidth hogging by some sophisticated subscribers without diluting the quality of service to a majority of the other users on the network," said Gary J. Johnson, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Sales for Procera Networks.
