CE Linux Forum Hires Linux Developer Matt Mackall
Friday, 21 October 2005The CE Linux Forum (CELF), a technology forum dedicated to advancing the use of the Linux operating system in consumer electronics products, has contracted Matt Mackall of Selenic Consulting as its first in-house developer.
"On behalf of the CELF, I warmly welcome Matt on board," said Scott Smyers, President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the CELF. "Hiring Matt is a reflection of our serious consideration of how to best meet our goal of partnering with and contributing to the open source community. With his track record and position in the community, Matt will be invaluable in helping the CELF to give back to the community while simultaneously assuring that our projects are aligned with open source best practices and current thinking."
A leading developer in the open source community, Mackall is the maintainer of the Linux-tiny project, a project devoted to reducing the memory and flash footprint of the Linux kernel.
"System size is one of the key areas of focus by the CELF, and we are pleased to have Matt join the group and continue working on this important aspect of Linux," said Tim Bird, CELF Architecture Group Chair.
As the Forum's principal developer, Mackall will concentrate on packaging and preparing CELF patches for submission to the kernel maintainers and will act as a key representative of those technologies in community discussions. Mackall's existing open-source projects are among those important to CELF, and he will continue to develop those technologies.
About the CE Linux Forum
The Forum was founded by Panasonic and Sony in 2003 to address technical issues that made Linux difficult to use in consumer electronics products, including system size, time to start up, security, and power use. At the beginning of this year the Forum became a California non-profit corporation, with offices in San Jose. The CELF's program of work includes publishing an archive of source-code patches, prioritizing and coordinating member work on development projects, and promoting the use of Linux in consumer products and the awareness of consumer-product issues in the Linux development community.
