CheckStatus.net Switches To Open Source And Linux

Sunday, 7 August 2005

Open source software is becoming increasingly popular in mainstream business as corporate boards struggle to cut costs and conform to higher standards of efficiency.

One new startup is CheckStatus.net - a web-based service that allows for automated forwarding of court documents for process service.

Interjurisdictional process service is an emerging niche market for process servers to provide their clients with a wider area of coverage and CheckStatus.net has developed low-cost software to accomodate this sector.

Recently, they migrated to a 100% open source operation.

"Open source software delivers solid performance and reliability. Converting to a Linux and FreeBSD infrastructure right down to the workstation was a daunting task, we did it mostly for security and reliability issues but the cost savings was also a big factor." notes CheckStatus.net owner Robert Dayton.

"Of course there is a learning curve. It is something new and different, but after a few days most people feel like they've used it all along. OpenOffice.org has made it much easier with their OpenOffice suite. Last week we converted a law office over to OpenOffice and will be migrating them to Linux shortly."

Small businesses are also considering their options.

"I had a big problem with spyware and virii in my office." says Brian Benton of SouthWest Landlord Services in Phoenix, AZ.
"I just couldn't keep my computer secure until I went with Linux and Firefox."

"We have helped migrate several businesses to Linux in the past few months and while its not our primary line of business, we're glad to help." says Robert Dayton.
"I think the coming months will see an escalation in this new trend."
