CISTI Begins World's First Full-Scale Use of ENCompass for Journals OnSite

Saturday, 21 May 2005

In a ceremony in Ottawa, Canada, on Wednesday, the Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information (CISTI) marked the world's first full-scale use of ENCompass for Journals OnSite (EJOS). The deployment comes at the conclusion of CISTI's successful beta test of EJOS, an advanced software platform from Endeavor Information Systems which locally stores and provides access to electronic journal content from any publisher in one location.

"CISTI appreciated being selected as the beta test site for EJOS. Our hands-on experiences with the EJOS platform convinced us we can now work with, search, link and manage our local electronic journal collections more effectively," said Bernard Dumouchel, Director General of CISTI, which is based in Ottawa. "CISTI has also provided a bilingual interface for the system, making it accessible for users in both English and French."

"The EJOS system is now available to almost 5,500 employees and guest workers at the National Research Council of Canada. With its high-powered search and retrieval capability to access full-text journal content, EJOS will significantly increase efficiency for researchers," Mr. Dumouchel notes. "CISTI now has a reliable, scalable, and secure environment and the capacity to load as much digital information as could ever be needed. This will be the foundation of an integrated 'infostructure' that can in the future be extended to CISTI's wider client community."

EJOS provides local control of licensed journal content, enabling large research institutions or consortia to create a permanent repository of electronic journal content. Through a unique architecture based on the ENCompass technology, EJOS enables libraries to load journal content from almost any commercial publisher in the world. The initial EJOS implementation for CISTI includes content from six publishers: Elsevier, Springer, Kluwer, NRC Research Press, Karger, and Institute of Physics Publishing, Inc. Additionally, locally produced content can be included in EJOS repositories.

The EJOS interface offers a clear end-user experience, through options to search content from all licensed publishers, or browse through content from the journal title, author, category or article levels. CISTI anticipates that EJOS will produce numerous benefits for its institution, including:

Low-cost hardware running on the Linux platform
Solid ENCompass architecture for data management
Searches using the FAST Data Search(TM) search engine licensed through Elsevier, of which Endeavor is a wholly-owned subsidiary
A scalable solution enabling large institutions like CISTI to provide comprehensive access to locally held journal content
A verified methodology for rapid data loading, indexing and searching
Metadata storage in Oracle(TM) for ease of use
A single text file greatly simplifying modifications of interfaces, as the Institute is part of the Canadian government and must develop custom interfaces in both English and French
Roland Dietz, Endeavor President and CEO, says the launch ceremony in Ottawa kicking off the world's first full-scale use of the EJOS platform is gratifying personally. "Yesterday's ceremonial ribbon-cutting reflects how CISTI is already confident that EJOS will fast become a key tool for its future management of local journal content. The beta test and complete deployment was Endeavors' first successful venture into clear interface usability. We're proud that CISTI was the first institution to go live with EJOS."

About ENCompass for Journals OnSite (EJOS)
