Collaborative Effort Eases Migration from Unix to Standard Systems
Thursday, 9 December 2004 Unisys Corporation (NYSE:UIS) today announced it is collaborating with Oracle Corporation (NASD:ORCL) to optimize Oracle's software on Microsoft's Windows operating systems. The companies are working together to enable customers relying on Oracle(R) databases and applications to take further advantage of the cost-effectiveness of standard Intel-based systems. Unisys and Oracle engineers are collaborating to optimize Oracle database applications for enterprise Windows by modeling enhancements on a Unisys ES7000 server equipped with Intel Itanium 2 processors. In addition, Oracle and Unisys will hold seminars for customers around the world to demonstrate the ease of migrating Oracle implementations to Intel-based systems. "Unisys is an ideal partner for us as we work to expand the options available to our customers," said Prem Kumar, vice president, Server Technologies Division, Oracle. "Unisys brings the enterpriseWindows expertise necessary to help organizations easily migrate to standard operating systems without losing any advantages offered by Oracle applications." Customers including Wetherill Associates, Inc., Calgary Co-operative Limited Association and the Nevada Department of Public Safety have chosen Unisys and Oracle to run on Windows - taking advantage of high-performance systems that cost significantly less than those based on alternative technologies. "All of our primary functions run on Oracle Financials and Oracle Human Resources Management System, so application support adds the greatest strategic value to our organization. Working with Oracle and Unisys, we have the ability to leverage our standardized Windows operating system by running our business-critical applications in a highly scaleable environment," said Tom Lynch, director of IT, Chicago Park District. "We immediately saw the benefit of delivering Oracle applications on the ES7000 environment. We're now able to run our bi-weekly payroll of 6,500 employees, 50 percent faster than our previous solution." "We are happy to be working with Oracle to facilitate this important capability for customers," said Tom Manter, director, Strategic Programs, Unisys. "IT managers now have the ability to achieve the highest levels of performance and scalability for their Oracle applications on enterprise Windows-based systems. This means that they are no longer locked into particular configurations and application sets, giving them unprecedented choice." Unisys, an Oracle Certified Advantage Partner in the Oracle PartnerNetwork, has published two benchmark results showing record performance and scalability for Oracle Database 10g running on Unisys servers with Microsoft's Windows Server 2003.
Benchmark Results
Running on a Unisys ES7000 Aries 420 Enterprise Server with 16 Intel Itanium 2 1.5 GHz processors on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Datacenter 64-bit Edition, Oracle Database 10g with Oracle Automatic Storage Management achieved a record performance of 9,853.3QphH@1000GB with a price-performance ratio of $68/QphH@1000GB, outperforming the nearest competitor on the same platform. With Automatic Storage Management, a simple storage management interface consistent across all server and storage platforms, Oracle Database 10g was able to use the most cost-efficient disks, without the need for RAID controllers. Additionally, Unisys has announced a TPC-C benchmark result using the same Unisys hardware, Intel processors and Microsoft's Windows 2003 operating system. Oracle Database 10g achieved 291,413 tpmC (transactions per minute) with a price-performance ratio of $4.98/tpmC. This result underscores Oracle's commitment to deliver outstanding performance and value on a variety of platforms, including Windows.
