Cyclades Makes Open Source SDK for IPMI Available on OpenIPMI Web Site
Tuesday, 21 December 2004Cyclades Corporation, a leader in next-generation IT infrastructure management, today announced the availability of its Open Source IPMI development kit for the creation of proxies, gateways and managers for IPMI-enabled devices. IPMI, the Intelligent Platform Management Interface, is the emerging standard for server management being driven by Intel, Dell and HP. IPMI uses a separate processor embedded in the server to enable IT managers to access, monitor and reboot servers that are unavailable due to application, hardware or operating system errors. It has been adopted by over 150 server manufacturers including IBM and Sun Microsystems. In November 2004, Cyclades introduced the first secure, enterprise manager for IPMI-enabled devices.
"When we embarked on creating the first secure, enterprise IPMI manager based on open source, we found the open source community was not united in their efforts," said Marcio Saito, Cyclades' CTO. "Today we are working to unify the open source community effort in this area."
In September 2004, Cyclades organized and hosted a conference to unite open source developers on issues of developing proxies, gateways and managers for IPMI-enabled devices. Attendees included leading Open Source developers, including the project leaders for OpenIPMI, IPMI Tool, FreeIPMI. Representatives from major hardware vendors such as Intel, Dell, Sun Microsystems, Supermicro, Montavista, California Digital, Newisys and Tyan also participated. In addition to ongoing joint development efforts and discussions on the establishment of a vendor-independent interoperability lab, today's announcement of the development kit is a direct result of these efforts. Information on the development kit can be obtained at www.openipmi.org, a Web site created by Cyclades to provide a forum for continued unity in the further development of IPMI proxies, gateways and managers based on open source.
"Cyclades' relationship with the open source community began in 1993 when we were the first hardware company in the world to develop communications boards for Linux," said John Lima, president of Cyclades. "From the beginning we believed in the business benefits of the open source approach and we continue to leverage these benefits to provide superior products for our customers. While other companies offer proprietary implementations of IPMI and other management protocols, Cyclades today provides platform and OS-independent products that deliver powerful business benefits. Our commitment to open source and Linux has allowed us to cost-effectively achieve this objective."
As a further demonstration of its commitment to open source, Cyclades recently joined Open Source Development Labs (OSDL) and will participate in the Labs' Desktop Linux and Data Center Linux working groups.
"We welcome Cyclades into OSDL and we look to them to bring a wealth of knowledge and a new perspective to our working groups," said Stuart Cohen, CEO of OSDL. "Cyclades has a long history with the open source community and we're pleased that they will bring this experience to OSDL."
