First StartCom Linux for AMD 64 Bit Processors

StartCom Ltd. released today its first StartCom Linux operating system intended for the advancing AMD 64 bit processor type, also called x86_64 architecture. Based on last weeks released StartCom Enterprise Linux 4.0.0, this release is compiled for - and geared - to run on this 64-bit register processors.

- The AMD64 architecture from Advanced Micro Devices allows to bridge the gap easily between 32-bit and 64-bit computing environments, which means, that it allows to run legacy 32 bit application of the x86 architecture, as well as native 64 bit. This provides some improved performance for demanding 32-bit applications which are not ported yet over to the 64-bit instructions set and huge advantages for native 64-bit programs.

- So where stands StartCom's new Enterprise Linux now? Roughly four fifth of all applications, including the kernel, are ported and compiled for 64-bit computing and provides two runtime library sets - one for 32 bit and one for 64 bit. Most server applications will run in native 64-bit mode, while some desktop applications will still rely on the 32-bit legacy mode. This release also allows for the development of both modes by providing various backward library sets and compilers.
