IBM Shatters Computing Performance Barrier

Saturday, 13 August 2005

IBM today announced that an IBM POWER5 processor-based eServer p5 570, running Linux has attained a milestone in computing history, soaring past other servers and setting a new world record for online transaction processing performance for 4-processor servers of 197,669 transactions per minute (tpmC) according to TPC. Until today, no Linux based server in history from IBM had claimed a top TPC-C mark.

On the industry leading TPC-C benchmark test, the IBM eServer p5 570 running DB2 UDB 8.2 on Linux and IBM FAStT TotalStorage turned in the best 4-processor server result ever by topping the best performance of the HP Integrity server and Linux running Oracle 10g by 23% and outperforming by 51% the HP ProLiant system running Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and Microsoft SQL Server 2000. To set the new TPC-C record, IBM leveraged the combined power of its POWER5 processor-based server -- the eServer p5 570 -- and Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS 4 running IBMs DB2 Universal Database. The IBM system also set a new world record for best 4-processor Linux price/performance at $3.93/tpmC.

Details on the eServer p5 570 Record Setting Performance:
System - IBM eServer p5 570
Processors - 4 POWER5 processors (4 core) at 1.9GHz
Operating System - Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS 4
Database - IBM DB2 UDB V8.2
Storage - IBM FAStT TotalStorage
TpmC (TPC-C Version 5.4) - 197,669 transactions per minute
$/tpmC - $3.93/tpmC
* as published on http://www.tpc.org

The TPC-C benchmark is an industry standard for measuring the ability of a server to process complex queries and large volumes of business data. The new IBM system achieved 197,669 transactions per minute (tpmC) at $3.93 per transaction ($/tpmC). The performance results easily beat any other comparable server and operating system combination currently posting results with TPC.

"The TPC-C benchmark world record is a commanding expression of innovation and exemplifies IBM's commitment to new levels of Linux capability on the Power Architecture," stated Karl Freund, vice president, IBM eServer pSeries. "This innovation empowers our clients to do even more sophisticated tasks at tremendous levels of efficiency. These results demonstrate the strength of an integrated IBM solution of POWER5, FAStT TotalStorage, DB2 UDB and Linux."

Industry Benchmark Leadership
The IBM eServer p5 570 system is part of one of the most decorated families of systems in the history of performance benchmarks. Some of IBM's numerous industry-leading server benchmarks include:

* Best overall Linux performance(1) in the two tier SAP SD Standard Application Benchmark
* Industry leader(2) for 8 and 16 processor performance on the SPECjbb2000 benchmark
* Industry leader(3) on the Siebel 7.7 Industry Applications Performance and Scalability Benchmark
* Industry leader(4) for 4-processor (8-thread) and 16-processor (32-thread) performance on the SPECompM2001 benchmark

About IBM
IBM offers a full line of servers that embrace industry standards. Powered by breakthroughs such as microprocessors with copper wiring and Silicon-on-Insulator technology, IBM servers have captured industry-leading benchmarks that measure transactions, Web serving capabilities and performance in software applications. The IBM eServer line is an integral part of customized, flexible and scalable Internet solutions for companies of all sizes. Linux® is capable of running on the entire IBM eServer line.
