JBoss, Inc. Reports First Quarter Results; Professional Open Source Leader on Track to be the Middleware Standard

Friday, 20 May 2005

JBoss, Inc., the Professional Open Source company, today announced first quarter results for 2005. Highlights include a sold-out inaugural user conference, JBoss World 2005, where the JBoss(R) Open Source Federation and JBoss Network(TM) were introduced; the release of Hibernate 3.0, a major new version of the category-leading object/relational mapping (ORM) technology; and a comprehensive enhancement of its indemnification coverage for the entire JBoss Enterprise Middleware System (JEMS(TM)).

JBoss also expanded its partnerships with Novell, Unisys and Sun Microsystems. Novell announced plans to extend support and contribute code and engineering resources for the entire JEMS stack. As a first step, Novell will contribute its Web Services for Remote Portlets (WSRP) standard-based portlet container and portlet library to JBoss Portal, a key component of JEMS. Under a new multi-year agreement, Unisys will support the JBoss Application Server on the full range of Unisys servers. Unisys has also contributed an Administration Console back to the JBoss community. JBoss and Sun expanded their collaboration on standards through a new multi-year agreement for JBoss to support the Java 2, Enterprise Edition (J2EE(TM)) platform.

'In this quarter, JBoss again demonstrated its fiscal discipline and ability to execute on its vision of Professional Open Source, which is changing the way software is built, distributed and supported,' said Marc Fleury, chairman and CEO of JBoss, Inc. 'JBoss remains committed to solving customer and partner needs, delivering proven technology backed by superior services and driving technical innovation that simplifies Java development and brings the power of the J2EE platform to all developers.'

Grows Customer and Partner Base
For the first quarter, a record number of customers bought Professional Support Services, including production support, training or consulting. New customers and partners include ADNEOM Technologies, Amentra, Applied Engineering Management Corporation, BlueRoads Corp., Bridges Transition Inc., CitiStreet, CoBank, Coventry Healthcare Systems, Diabol AB, Digital Map Products, Drutt Corporation, EPI-USE Systems (PTY) South Africa, Express Scripts, FujiFilm e-Systems, Foundation RESTINA, Identify Software, KANA Software, KPMG CT Information Technology, Lightningcast, Linmar Systems, PolicyMatter, PortBlue Corporation, Premiere Global Services, Inc., Quadrite Inc., Restena DNS LU, Sinapsi SpA, SpikeSource, SPL Worldgroup, Tier 2 Consulting and Wyndham International.

In response to interest from its community, JBoss established the JBoss Open Source Federation, which will extend the Professional Open Source methodology to individuals and companies, while enabling new and existing open source projects to commercialize and scale for the enterprise. The initiative will stimulate growth of an ecosystem of software and services around JEMS, with JBoss, Inc. delivering value-added services.

Simplifying Java Development
In this quarter, JBoss released several major upgrades to its JEMS products--all aimed at simplifying Java development and making the J2EE platform easy for every developer to use. Key new releases include:

Hibernate 3.0 - This landmark release of JBoss' award-winning and standard-setting ORM technology attests to the success of the Professional Open Source model. With resources, technology direction, core development and support services from JBoss, Hibernate was able to scale from a popular open source project to enterprise-class software. Unveiled at JBoss World, Hibernate 3.0 features rich new functionality to support enterprise-level persistence. These new features include support for temporal, or historical, data; support for hand-generated SQL; reporting and monitoring capabilities using any JMX compatible console; support for the latest Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) 3.0 draft specification; and a new Hibernate toolset based on the JBoss Eclipse IDE. A list of what's new in Hibernate 3.0 is available at http://www.hibernate.org/200.html#A3; the download is available at http://www.hibernate.org/30.html.

EJB 3.0 Preview 5 - EJB 3.0 represents a major improvement and simplification of the J2EE platform and JBoss has been an active leader in the development of the specification. The goal of EJB 3.0 is to simplify the development of Java applications and standardize the persistence API for the Java platform. JBoss has implemented most of the major features of the EJB 3.0 Early Draft 2 specification, and with a final release expected later in 2005, developers are encouraged to download and use the EJB 3.0 Preview today. More information for the EJB 3.0 Preview release is available at http://www.jboss.com/products/ejb3.

JBoss Eclipse IDE 1.5 Alpha - JBoss Eclipse IDE extends Eclipse with a series of plug-ins that enable programmers to develop, deploy, test and debug their JEMS-based applications within the Eclipse IDE. With a final release expected later in 2005, this JBoss Eclipse IDE Alpha release provides new features that simplify AOP, EJB3, Hibernate and JBoss jBPM application development. More information for this JBoss Eclipse IDE community release is available at http://www.jboss.com/products/jbosside.

Expanded Professional Support Services
JBoss added significant enhancements to its support service offerings to better serve its growing customer base in the enterprise market. Unlike third-party packagers, JBoss Professional Support Services, which include training, consulting and professional support, are delivered by experts with direct access to the core developers of the JEMS stack. Professional Support Service highlights from the quarter include:

Boss Network - JBoss announced the JBoss Network, which will be the centerpiece of the JBoss Support Subscription Service offering and the standard mechanism for JBoss to deliver services to customers. This includes providing knowledge, software distribution assistance, updates, patches and new customer code across any grid of JBoss servers, as well as the management and monitoring of JBoss production systems. It will be rolled out across the JBoss customer base, and will eventually be integrated with the JBoss Open Source Federation to provide a one-stop support platform for JEMS and all related technologies.

Comprehensive Indemnification Coverage - JBoss extended its indemnification support for the entire JBoss Enterprise Middleware System (JEMS) and further enhanced the level of coverage JBoss customers are entitled to. Under the new coverage, JBoss will provide unlimited coverage for defense, repair and replacement to protect intellectual property and pay damage claims up to four times the value of the support contract. This enhanced coverage, among the most comprehensive in the industry, gives enterprise customers accountability and peace of mind for their open source JEMS deployments.

Support for Complete Apache Web Software - Through a partnership with Covalent Technologies, a steward and contributor to the Apache Software Foundation, JBoss introduced an option allowing JBoss Application Server or Apache Tomcat support customers to add full professional support services for the Apache HTTP Server (Apache Web Server), the most widely deployed web server in Fortune 500 enterprises. With this new option, in addition to support services for Apache Tomcat 5.5 and the Tomcat Web Server Connector (mod_jk), JBoss now offers enterprise customers a complete support package for Apache Web software--all from one trusted source.

Training - JBoss successfully conducted dozens of public and private, on-site training courses, including newly introduced courses for JBoss jBPM and Apache Tomcat. JBoss has also expanded training sessions internationally with the help of JBoss Authorized Service Partners (JASPs). Look for courses in Q2 2005 in Amsterdam, Cape Town, Helsinki, Hyderabad, Munich, Nagoya and Stuttgart. See the current schedule at http://www.jboss.com/services/training/schedule.

Online Education - JBoss continues to offer insightful free Webinars on industry issues and JBoss core technology. For a schedule of upcoming and archived Webinars, please visit http://www.jboss.com/services/online_education.
