Wednesday, 29 December 2004To quote Wood "I have no regrets, it is what made me who I am today and I am a better person for it, and I also would never have met so many wonderful people that sometimes go unnoticed in today"s world". "We have an urgent need for your old computer parts," says Wood. "We plan to build as many systems as we can and get them into the homes of persons recovering from mental illness", these people are usually on a fixed income from social security are unable to afford a computer and are very isolated. Computers can assist them in reaching out in so many different ways. People often have computer skills they learned before they became sick. The computer helps by allowing the use of email - e.g. for job searching or to communicate family and friends…to read and learn about there specific medications and treatments. This will all be volunteer and no money will be made by DIY, PC-Workbench, we plan to simply give the computers away once they are done, we will be using the Mandrake Linux operating system (very comparable to the way Microsoft"s windows works when installed and configured properly and it is free to install on computers).
