Low Cost PowerPC System Offers IT an Open Source Development Platform

Contemplating Open Source software for improving productivity and reducing IT costs? Melody Bornheimer, President of Sumo Computer, stated today that Sumo Computer announces the introduction of its configuration service for the Buffalo Technology, Inc. Kuro Box/HG system.

The Kuro Box/HG is a PowerPC based computer server with a 266 MHz PPC 603e processor, 128 MB of memory, 2 - USB 2.0 interfaces and a Gigabit Ethernet interface. The Kuro Box/HG also has an ATA/133 disk interface, for low cost – high capacity disk drives. The Kuro Box/HG was designed for ‘expert’ computer users, due to its headless server design and its DIY configuration.

Sumo Computer has taken the Kuro Box/HG and added a Maxtor Diamond 10, 250 Gb disk drive and Gentoo Linux to create a more user friendly, ready to go system. With the Kuro Box/HG shipped with Gentoo Linux preloaded and your network information already setup, all you need to do is plug it in, connect it to your network and you’re ready to go!

Sumo Computer has chosen the Gentoo Linux distribution due to its ease of administration and over 9,000 Open Source ported applications. Gentoo has a very active user and developer community. The Gentoo community will make it easier to begin to evaluate Open Source software to improve your companies overall productivity.

The cost of the Sumo Computer configured Kuro Box/HG is $549.00.
