Mono Leader to Outline Cross-Platform Options for Microsoft Developers
Sunday, 11 September 2005Miguel de Icaza, maintainer of the Mono project, will be hosting an independent Mono users' meeting on the margins of Microsoft's Professional Developers Conference next week in Los Angeles. Mono is a Novell-sponsored open source implementation of Microsoft .NET used to run Web and rich Windows applications on Linux and easily build new Linux applications with .Net technologies.
The Mono project provides a productive development environment, stable APIs and a well-defined technology roadmap that helps .NET developers leverage their skills to build applications for Linux and UNIX. With free developer tools available, Mono users have the flexibility to chose their development and deployment platforms and can take advantage of new platforms without a steep learning curve. As a result, Windows developers don't need to be tied to a Microsoft platform; they can use their .NET and C# skills to build cross-platform applications that meet the needs of today's diverse enterprise.
“Approach new platforms with your existing skills,” said de Icaza, vice president of developer platforms at Novell. “You don't need to learn an entirely new development environment to ensure your applications run on diverse systems. If you are comfortable developing in Windows, do it. Then take the next step and port your applications over to Linux using Mono and make your work more relevant across platforms and vendors.
Mono supports a variety of platforms, including Linux, Mac OS X, Solaris, BSD and Windows, and a variety of hardware options, such as x86, AMD 64, IA- 64 (Itanium 2), EMT 64, PowerPC, ARM, S/390, SPARC and SPARC v9.
