Motorola Selects MontaVista Carrier Grade Linux as Preferred Development and Deployment Platform

Tuesday, 17 May 2005

Motorola, Inc. ( NYSE: MOT ) today announced the selection of MontaVista® Linux® Carrier Grade Edition ( CGE ) as the first preferred software development and deployment operating system for its Open Application-Enabling Platforms.

Customers of both Motorola and MontaVista will see improved coordination of product roadmaps and support programs, allowing them to more easily incorporate new and upgraded communications computing technologies into their products. Customers also will be able to receive support throughout their product lifecycles.

This new strategic relationship represents a significant expansion of an earlier agreement under which both Motorola and MontaVista products have been deployed to leading telecom equipment manufacturers worldwide.

“Working with an industry-leading carrier grade Linux provider for the embedded and communication markets will allow our joint customers to accelerate the development and deployment of next generation communications applications,” said Wendy Vittori, corporate vice president and general manager, Embedded Communications Computing, Motorola. “Through our strategic relationship, we will work with MontaVista and the standards organizations to evolve the carrier grade Linux specification to meet a new set of industry needs that are emerging with the growing adoption of communications servers.”

Under the non-exclusive agreement, Motorola’s standard Open Application-Enabling Platforms will be certified with MontaVista Linux CGE, upon which enabling software products will be developed, integrated, tested and delivered. Further, MontaVista will continue to develop and optimize CGE on all current and future Motorola platforms and will support all deployed configurations including Motorola’s Open Application-Enabling Platforms and the AdvancedTCA®-based AXP products announced in 2004.

“With multiple generations of MontaVista Linux adopted by ten of the largest network equipment providers worldwide, we are confident that MontaVista is the leading and trusted provider of Linux for carrier-class deployments,” said Jim Ready, CEO, MontaVista Software. "Motorola is the leading systems provider to this industry and we view this expanded relationship as a watershed event for MontaVista, as well as one that provides further evidence of the accelerating demand for carrier grade Linux as a platform for network infrastructure. We are excited to be working closer with Motorola on its key initiatives around carrier infrastructure, and look forward to collaborating on more ways to deliver open-standards based solutions to assist leading telecom equipment manufacturers design differentiated products quickly and easily.”

As a participating member of the Motorola Embedded Connections alliance program since 1999, MontaVista has been actively engaged with Motorola to develop and market Linux on Motorola’s CompactPCI® single board computer and ProcessorPMC products.
