New IBM eServer p5 Systems Delivered to Lockheed Martin
Monday, 27 December 2004IBM today announced that Lockheed Martin, one of the world's largest systems technology developers, has received IBM's latest UNIX technology to help power mission critical applications utilized by a US Government Federal customer in support of Lockheed Martin's Integrated Systems &Solutions (IS&S) business area. IS&S will use the new IBM POWER5™ processor-based IBM eServer™ p5 570 systems with Micro-Partitioning™ and virtualization technology to consolidate a large number of UNIX servers, resulting in performance, systems management and availability improvements.

Lockheed Martin will be implementing two 16-way 1.9GHz p5 570 systems running IBM's most advanced UNIX environment -- AIX 5L™ v5.3. Lockheed Martin is currently installing the p5-570 systems as part of its large IT infrastructure. As part of the multi-year agreement with Lockheed Martin's IS&S, the IBM eServer p5 570 system will act as the foundation for the mission programs' IT infrastructure.
The IBM eServer p5 570 is a POWER5 processor-based mid-range server that offers clients such as Lockheed Martin outstanding price/performance, mainframe-inspired reliability and availability features. The p5-570 is well-suited for server consolidation projects, database and application serving, e-commerce and departmental or regional server deployments. The p5-570 is a cost-effective, flexible server for the on-demand environment. By combining the most advanced IBM leading-edge technology for enterprise-class performance and flexible adaptation to changing conditions, the p5-570 delivers the key capabilities clients need in on demand environments.

The IBM eServer p5 570 is already one of the most decorated UNIX servers in the history of performance benchmarks. Among the performance marks currently held by the p5 570:
-- TPC-C running DB2: the p5-570 system holds the record for the fastest 16-way result, is the only 16-way system in the TPC-C top ten list by performance and beats a 16-way HP Integrity system by 168% and a 64-way HP PA-RISC system by nearly 50%(1). -- SAP: the 8-way p5-570 achieved the best-in-class two-tier SAP SD Standard application benchmark result, and the 16-way p5-570 achieved the best-in-class two-tier SAP SD Standard Application benchmark result(2). -- SPECfp_rate2000: the 8-way p5-570 system holds the record for the fastest 8-way result, besting an HP PA-RISC system by 298%(3). -- SPEC OMP2001: the 16-way IBM eServer p570 holds the record for the fastest 16-way result, 335% faster than a 16-way HP PA-RISC Superdome(4). -- TPC-C price/performance: The p5-570 achieved 57% better price/performance than HP PA-RISC, when comparing the p5-570 TPC-C price/performance result of 4.95 $/tpmC versus the HP9000 Superdome TPC-C price/performance result of 11.66 $/tpmC(5).
