Open Source Software Institute launches Research Fellowship Program
Friday, 18 February 2005The Open Source Software Institute ( OSSI ) announced today the establishment of the OSSI Research Fellowship Program.
OSSI's Research Fellowship program recruits, sponsors and hosts academic and professional researchers in order to promote advanced study, development and promulgation of open source software programs, applications, policy and procedures.
"The ultimate goal of the Research Fellowship program is to promote the advancement of open source software adoption and implementation in government environments by recruiting, sponsoring and focusing talented people to the technical, academic and business challenges of open source software systems," said OSSI executive director John Weathersby.
OSSI Fellowships will be divided into four categories: OSSI Faculty Fellows; OSSI Graduate Fellows; OSSI Professional Fellows; and OSSI Community Fellows.
Dr. Andrew Strelzoff, Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the University of Southern Mississippi has been named the initial OSSI Faculty Fellow, and Meethune Bhowmick has been named the initial OSSI Graduate Fellow.
Bhowmick is a post-graduate student at the University of Southern Mississippi whose research includes the implementation of re-programmable co-processors through the use of the Linux Operating System and Field Programmable Gate Arrays ( FPGA ).
OSSI's Research Fellowship program is a non-exclusive research and development effort open to all interested individuals, academic entities, government agencies and corporate organizations that strives to achieve technical, ethical and professional excellence in the development and distribution of open source software programs. OSSI's Fellowship program is non-discriminatory and welcomes all to apply.
