Push for Linux in public sector
Thursday, 23 December 2004Novell Asia’s corporate technology strategist John Phillips declined to provide details on the talks, but said the company is holding a number of dialogues with Government organisations to encourage the adoption of Linux in the Government services. He told CompuTimes that Novell sees good demand for Linux in key public sector areas such as education, finance and utility, given the need to reduce cost without compromising on the viability of the solution. He believes that there is an excellent opportunity for Novell to position and deploy Linux in the local public sector market segment given the country’s strong support for the Linux movement. And with the recent integration of Ximian and SuSe Linux into the Novell product line, the company is filling the needs of Government customers specifically and cost-effectively. In the enterprise segment, Novell’s go-to-market strategy for its Linux desktop for enterprise solutions will be carried out via partner programmes, Phillips said. Under its open desktop initiative, the company has completed the first phase of migrating its desktops to Linux. The migration demonstrates Novell’s commitment to Linux and paves the way for Novell customers to do the same. Locally, about 45 per cent of Novell’s employees use the Linux desktop.
