Spring and Oracle Enhance Open Source Offering

Sunday, 8 October 2006

Extending its support of Interface21 and the Spring community, today Oracle announced that it has provided integration of TopLink(R) Essentials, the open source EJB 3.0 Java Persistence API (JPA) reference implementation, with the latest Spring Framework release. Among numerous other innovations and enhancements, version 2.0 of the Spring Framework includes support for JPA and will ship with TopLink Essentials. Interface21, the company behind Spring, and Oracle have been working closely together to add JPA support to Spring Framework 2.0. Oracle and Interface21 will use their combined technologies to drive adoption of lightweight open source development frameworks that simplify the creation of next-generation application platforms.

"The recently reached milestone of one million downloads of the Spring Framework is a testament to its value for developers and its ability to simplify the development process," said Dennis Leung, vice president, Oracle Fusion Middleware development, Oracle. "By combining the Spring Framework with the premier JPA solution in the open source community -- TopLink Essentials -- developers gain an integrated open source framework which will help them decrease costs and improve their productivity."

The integration of TopLink Essentials with the Spring Framework 2.0 makes it easier for developers to build next-generation applications by enabling them to access business data as POJOs (Plain Old Java Objects). Until now, there was no standard persistence implementation, which forced developers to use proprietary persistence solutions. Spring 2.0 now comes with built-in support for the Java Persistence API, integrated with Spring's own, proven, POJO programming model, and includes TopLink Essentials.

"Extending our partnership with Oracle and completing this technology integration is a significant addition to the Spring Framework directly benefiting our open source community and corporate users," said Rod Johnson, founder of the Spring Framework and CEO of Interface21. "Oracle has been a huge supporter and leader of Java development for more than a decade and we are delighted to be able to offer the JPA reference implementation as part of the Spring Framework 2.0 release. We share Oracle's commitment to providing the developer community with the most advanced light weight, open source technologies, and helping to foster innovation in Java persistence."

Oracle's Commitment to Java Developers

In addition to the TopLink Essentials integration with Spring Framework 2.0, Oracle has been a leading supporter of Java since 1995. The company recognizes that a key element in driving the adoption of the next generation Java Platform, Java EE 5, is simplification of development around EJB 3.0 and JavaServer Faces (JSF), a web application framework designed to enable developers to more easily build user interfaces for enterprise Java applications. As the co-specification lead for the recently approved EJB 3.0 specification, Oracle has donated significant time and resources toward developing standards and donating technology that will simplify application development. In addition to providing TopLink Essentials as the JPA reference implementation, Oracle is leading the JPA Eclipse project, Dali. Oracle is also spearheading a JSF tooling project within the Eclipse Foundation open- source community and is a core contributor to the Apache MyFaces project.
