SteelEye CTO James Bottomley to Represent Open Source Development Community as OSDL's Newest Board Member

Wednesday, 1 March 2006

The Open Source Development Labs (OSDL), a global consortium dedicated to accelerating the adoption of Linux(R), today announced that open source developer and SteelEye Chief Technology Officer James Bottomley will represent the development community as the newest elected member to the OSDL board of directors.

James Bottomley is chief technology officer at SteelEye Technology, a leading provider of IT solutions for business continuity and disaster recovery. He is an active member of the open source community and has more than 12 years of experience with positions held in academia and at AT&T Bell Labs and NCR.

"OSDL's board leadership provides direction that is fundamental to OSDL as we look at filling the next generation of gaps to accelerate Linux," said Stuart Cohen, CEO of OSDL. "James' experience and community insight is a natural addition as Linux and open source software continues to mature and to be deployed in diverse environments around the world."

"Linux and open source software are now mainstream and growth continues to accelerate. Coordination between all the players is critical to future success. I look forward to representing the development community and to collaborating with OSDL, its members and other open source developers and users," said Bottomley.

Bottomley joins a board led by Chair Ross Mauri of IBM and fellow board members Richard Wirt of Intel; Kazuhiro Ooki of NEC; Masahiro Date of Fujitsu; Keiichiro Nakanishi from Hitachi; Steve Geary of Hewlett-Packard; Markus Rex of Novell; Larry Augustin from VA Software; Jerry Greenberg of G. S. Greenberg Associates; Frank Fanzilli of Fanzilli-Bauer Technology Partners; and Stuart Cohen. Markus Rex, chief technology officer of Novell's Linux and Platform Group, replaces Jeff Hawkins of Novell on the board this year. Member-elected directors hold their seats for two years with half of the board up for re-election annually.

"Linux is the fastest growing operating system in the world," said Ross Mauri, Chair of OSDL's board of directors and General Manager, System p, IBM Systems and Technology Group. "James will provide the OSDL board and its members with new perspectives as we begin to move beyond focusing solely on Linux adoption to maximizing Linux for users."
