Sun's Solaris 10 Wins in Telefonica Project

Friday, 3 November 2006

Sun Microsystems Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) today announced that Telefonica de Espana, (a branch of Telefonica, a world leader in the telecommunications sector), has chosen Sun's Solaris(TM) Operating System (OS), Sun Fire(TM) servers and services from Sun Microsystems to upgrade and consolidate its multiple Oracle(R) databases. Sun is serving as the prime contractor on the Telefonica project, and also resold Oracle database licenses to Telefonica de Espana under the terms of a reseller agreement recently signed with Oracle. Oracle Corp., a long-time Sun strategic ally, is working closely with Sun and other partners to deliver a complete solution.

"The extensive benefits of Solaris attract customers to Sun, and this project shows how we can add value far beyond the quality of the services and systems we produce," said Peter Ryan, senior vice president, global sales and services for Europe, Middle East and Africa at Sun. "Our strong alliances and reseller agreements with key vendors such as Oracle, combined with our ability to deliver expert advice and best practices at every phase of the project, puts Sun in an excellent position to serve as prime contractor and deliver a complete solution from a single source."

Specifically, Telefonica has purchased and deployed two Sun Fire E20K systems-Sun's flagship, top-of-the-line enterprise server model-as the consolidation platform for more than 20 of the most critical individual databases. The Sun servers will run the Solaris 10 OS, the most advanced operating system on the planet, and Sun(TM) Cluster software for high availability. To further boost availability levels and performance, Telefonica will upgrade to Oracle Real Application Clusters in a Metro Cluster (multi-site) deployment.

"In our opinion, Oracle has the best database product in the open world, and Sun has very well suited servers to support the high loads of our databases," said Jose Luis Conesa, IT production director at Telefonica de Espana. "We selected the most powerful products each of these companies has to offer to increase the availability, reliability, and performance of our most critical databases, and we asked Sun and Oracle to help us migrate to the new environment."

Sun's ability to provide a broad range of consulting and support services was instrumental in winning the Telefonica business, according to Conesa. "Sun's expertise in high-availability systems and enterprise consolidation, combined with its strong partnership with Oracle, led us to the conclusion that they could provide the support and best practices we needed to architect, implement, and manage this solution. Besides, it was very convenient to have a main contractor to take care of the architecture, implementation, and tuning of all the components involved in such a high-performance cluster (servers, operating system, cluster software and database), especially when the servers are separated by tenths of kilometers."

The Sun Fire E20K servers feature the ability to hot-swap processor boards without bringing the system down, and also exchange them across other smaller server of the same family, increasing service-level availability. The servers run the Solaris OS. The Solaris(TM) Resource Manager software also allows resources to be dynamically allocated to applications. Through the use of Sun Cluster software, one of the industry's premier availability platform, Telefonica can also improve the resilience of its business-critical databases.

Telefonica is implementing Oracle Real Application Clusters to enable single databases to be deployed across a cluster of servers, providing fault tolerance from failures and planned outages. Oracle Real Application Clusters also includes unique technology to protect the data center from complete failure and make recovery time fast and predictable.

"We have great confidence in Sun and Oracle because the companies have a long track record of success working together, working for other major enterprises, and working very hard to make each project a success," said Conesa.
