Taking the Lead in Security and Performance; New version of the TYPO3 Content Management System Released

Monday, 18 July 2005

The new version of the popular content management system, TYPO3, has added features that focus on usability and improving security and performance.

Greater Efficiency for Editors
Navigating a website in TYPO3 has always been intuitive for editors since they could use a tree-like format that mirrors their site's architecture. An editor could jump from one page to another simply by putting in the page number or page alias in a toolbar. Shortcuts to frequently visited pages could be added with a click of a button. With the new version of TYPO3, editors can now jump to a specific content record using the same familiar tool.

Moving data from one site to another has just gotten easier as well. TYPO3 has upgraded its import/export tool and added a number of new components. References within documents or websites are now recognized automatically. Whether it's images, links, text or documents available for download, TYPO3 will include them in the exported or imported file. This feature is also available in XML format.

The powerful search engine now produces statistics about the terms entered. Editors can use this information to tailor their site to their visitors. The search engine also indexes new types of data, such as Microsoft Excel tables, Microsoft PowerPoint presentations and OpenOffice.org documents.

Concentration on Performance
Speed is always a concern with any content management system and, for years, TYPO3 has been a leader in performance thanks to its advanced page caching mechanism. TYPO3 has taken caching one step further with the addition of the highly configurable "Cache-Control Headers". By focusing on client-side caching through the use of reverse proxy, TYPO3 can deliver an increase in speed as well as a reduction in traffic for larger sites that need it the most.

As of now, each language version will be installed as individual "Language Packs", thus saving space and improving performance. This represents a new departure from the integration of services directly into the core as TYPO3 continues down the path towards modularity and an avoidance of redundant functions.

Security and Quality Control
One of the main reasons the TYPO3 Association was founded was to address security and quality control concerns and the members take this role very seriously. A recent event illustrates how well the team handles these types of situations. Within one hour of the appearance of a form mail bug, the TYPO3 security team was officially on the job. A short while later, the bug had been fixed; a reaction time that clients of many commercial and open source systems can only dream about. This process will be applied to future versions of TYPO3 as well.
