Teradata Brings Linux to Enterprise-Class Data Warehouses

Teradata, a division of NCR Corporation (NYSE:NCR), announced that it is bringing Linux to enterprise-class data warehouses as it did with the Windows(R) operating systems. With either operating system, Linux or Windows, Teradata delivers the same enterprise-class scalability, availability and manageability as it does on its own UNIX operating system, UNIX MP-RAS.

"By adding Linux to the list of operating systems, Teradata provides its customers yet another choice," said Scott Gnau, vice president and general manager, Teradata research and development. "The adoption of Linux further enables the powerful Teradata enterprise data warehouse to integrate seamlessly into even the most complex and open IT architectures."

Teradata selected Novell, Inc., because it provides a full range of industry-leading Linux services to support large-scale enterprises. In addition, Novell recently released the SUSE(TM) LINUX Enterprise Server 9 software, delivering numerous security improvements, maintenance enhancements, and other updates providing a scalable and efficient solution for enterprise customers who are considering the move to an open source operating system.

Gnau continued, "Regardless of the operating system chosen by the customer, the Teradata data warehouse solution remains the same. The scalability, availability, manageability and performance are built into the Teradata parallel database architecture relying on the operating system for only base-level services."

The Linux operating system runs on the previously announced Teradata database server, NCR 5400 Server, with dual Intel Xeon EM64T 3.6 GHz processors running in 64-bit mode. This combination of technology offers Teradata customers advantages, both business and technical. It enables them to leverage the powerful Teradata database, Intel technology and the Linux open operating system.

Teradata customers may select Linux or they may select from these operating systems - Microsoft Windows 2003 on 32-bit and NCR UNIX(R) SVR4 MP-RAS Version 3.03. The Linux operating system with 64-bit architecture is currently in customer beta testing and will be available in early 2006.

In addition to making SUSE LINUX available for the operating system, Teradata already offers tools and utilities products that provide the load and access connectivity to user applications on both SUSE LINUX and Red Hat Linux.
