The Code Project, Mainsoft Announce 'Race to Linux'

Saturday, 17 September 2005

What: The Code Project, a virtual community comprised of 2.2 million
Visual Studio(R) developers worldwide, today announced that
registrations for the first-ever "Race to Linux(R)," sponsored
by Mainsoft(R) Corporation and IBM, are now open.
The Race to Linux challenges Visual Studio developers to port
existing ASP.NET applications to Linux using their
cross-platform tool of choice (e.g. Mono, Grasshopper, PHP,
Macromedia, etc.). The Code Project will announce which
ASP.NET application needs to run on IBM xSeries Linux at the
start of each race.

The winners of each of the three races will win an Xbox 360.
In addition, contestants using Grasshopper will also qualify to
win an Xbox 360 game of their choice. Limit one Xbox 360 and
one game per participant.

When: The first race begins Monday, September 19th at 8:00 a.m. North
America PT. Check The Code Project for additional start times.

Where: Registrants can sign up at www.codeproject.com/racetolinux.

Why: One in five Code Project community members uses Linux
development technologies, and sixteen percent use Java. Recent
studies by Evans Data Corporation (www.evansdata.com) indicate
there is a growing interest in cross-platform Linux
development. In the United States, one in five developers that
use the Visual Studio .NET IDE as their primary development
environment has written an application that runs on Linux.
That percent is expected to increase to twenty-five percent by
2006. In both Europe and Asia, Linux application development
is expected to jump to one in three Visual Studio developers by
2006.

The Code Project is hosting the Race to Linux to encourage
Visual Studio developers to experiment with .NET-to-Linux
porting options and share best practices in successfully
porting .NET server applications to Linux.
