TimeSys to Commercialize Latest ARM Processor-based Linux Distributions
Monday, 14 March 2005TimeSys® Corporation, a leader in embedded Linux® technologies and development tools, today announced a partnership with ARM to deliver fully commercialized 2.6-based Linux distributions for the ARM® architecture to semiconductor vendors and OEMs worldwide. In this alliance, ARM will join the TimeSys OnBoard Program( tm ), the embedded Linux industry's only comprehensive program for hosting, certifying, distributing and supporting commercialized custom Linux distributions. TimeSys will also become a member of the ARM Connected Community, joining a global network of companies providing solutions for products based on the ARM architecture.
The TimeSys OnBoard Program provides a vehicle for continuous delivery of the most advanced Linux features to customers and partners. Through the program, TimeSys rapidly packages, maintains and supports commercial TimeStorm® Linux Development Kits ( LDKs ) with the latest feature enhancements developed by and with OnBoard Partners. TimeStorm LDKs from TimeSys include complete hardware-optimized embedded Linux distributions with ready-to-run target images ( kernel and root file system ) and an Eclipse 3.0-based cross-development environment to facilitate application development and platform customization.
First Linux Kit to Support ARM920T Core Module for Advanced Communications Devices The first TimeStorm Linux Development Kit available from the partnership will include ARM processor-based enhancements for the ARM RealView® Integrator( tm ) Compact Platform with ARM920T( tm ) Core Module. Based around the high performance ARM9TDMI® 32-bit RISC processor core, the ARM920T processor is ideal for a range of advanced consumer electronic and communications applications including next generation smart phones, communicators, PDAs, 3G baseband and applications processors, platform OS-based devices, digital still cameras, audio and video decoding, automotive infotainment and set top boxes. The Integrator/CP can be extended to support user created IP and is compatible with Integrator Core Modules from the ARM9E( tm ), ARM10E( tm ) and ARM11( tm ) processor families.
"The OnBoard Program can turn the most advanced Linux features developed by ARM into commercial Linux distributions supported and maintained by TimeSys," said Philippe Robin, Linux product manager, ARM. "TimeSys will help deliver the latest Linux optimizations to our users, which can result in significant time-to-market and functionality benefits for the community of embedded Linux developers building advanced products based on the ARM architecture."
As a member of the ARM Connected Community, TimeSys is joining a global network of companies aligned to provide a complete solution, from design to manufacture to end use, for products based on the ARM architecture. ARM offers a variety of resources to community members, including promotional programs and peer-networking opportunities that enable ARM Partners to jointly provide end-to-end customer solutions.
"In this alliance, TimeSys will bring to market the most innovative ARM processor-based Linux enhancements for products based on the ARM architecture, from mobile phones and digital cameras to games consoles and automotive systems," said Larry Weidman, president and CEO of TimeSys. "We're pleased to welcome ARM into the OnBoard Program and to be welcomed as a new member of the ARM Connected Community."
