Town of Edson receives international volunteer contribution award

The Town of Edson, Alberta, was recognized today by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) for its outstanding contribution to international municipal cooperation.

FCM First Vice-President, Councillor Gord Steeves of Winnipeg, Manitoba, presented the award at FCM's 69thAnnual Conference and Municipal ExpoTM in Montréal, Québec. Receiving the award on behalf of Edson were Councillor Louise Connolly and Joan Parker, Edson's Director of Finance and Administration.

Since 2002, the Town of Edson has maintained a Municipal Partnership with Satun, Thailand. Vice-President Steeves noted that the Town of Edson demonstrated commitment by taking on leadership of the partnership from another Canadian partner.

Town of Edson staff have been instrumental in helping their Thai colleagues develop the ability to use Information Technology to improve municipal services. When the partnership began in 2002, most Satun municipal staff were unfamiliar with computers. Four years later, staff are computer literate and able to apply information technology to benefit their work.

"The partnership between Edson and Satun has received national recognition in Thailand, and achievements through the partnership have been shared as a model for other municipalities," said Steeves.

FCM has been the national voice of municipal government since 1901. Since 1987, FCM has supported initiatives to strengthen local governments and municipal capacity building in approximately 20 countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America, with funding from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).
