Trolltech Helps China's Enterprises Lead Global Linux Mobile Phone Market
Tuesday, 29 November 2005Trolltech(R), provider of leading technologies that make advanced software faster to build and easier to use, is demonstrating its strong commitment to the Chinese market and solidifying its role as a Linux pioneer as co-host of the "Chinese Mobile Phone Leadership -- Leveraging Linux" conference. This exclusive conference, organized by the China Academy of Telecommunications Research (CATR) and the Ministry of Information Industry (MII) and fully supported by Trolltech, opens today in Beijing, China.
The ground-breaking one day event brings together key stakeholders in the Chinese wireless phone market to discuss the strategic importance of Linux-based phones. Speakers will discuss current market conditions and opportunities, and explore the future growth of Linux-based mobile phones in China and the world. Government researchers, academics and officials will be present along with top industry executives and analysts.
The conference has attracted global industry leaders like Intel, Texas Instruments, Philips, MontaVista, Opera Software, Pollex, and Teleca as main sponsors. These companies along with China's major mobile phone enterprises will be showcasing their latest Linux technologies at the conference.
"With over 370 million subscribers, China has been the fastest growing mobile phone market in the world. We hope China's enterprises can leverage Linux to build their leadership in the coming years," said Mr. Zhang Xinsheng, Vice Director-General of MII's Science & Technology Department.
"China has been on the forefront of the embedded Linux movement, and it is the most comprehensive marketplace for open source products and wireless handsets, that's why we organized the event," said Mr. Yang Zemin, President of CATR. CATR is the agency authorized by the government ministry to arrange national events on its behalf.
"We are pleased to support the conference and to be closely involved in organizing it with CATR. To assure that Linux becomes more widely adopted in mobile devices -- one of Trolltech's core markets -- we are committed to cooperating with other industry leaders to grow the market for Linux," said Haavard Nord, Trolltech CEO. "Embedded Linux is becoming a standard technology for mobile devices. Linux platforms allow manufacturers of mobile devices to deliver cutting-edge and uniquely-branded products. The price points that Linux offers are only a fraction of proprietary platforms, a very important factor in price-competitive markets like China."
"With the encouragement of the Chinese government, China has been one of the first countries to benefit from Linux. As Greater Asia and major global organizations embrace Linux, the opportunities for leading-edge Chinese manufacturers will only increase," Haavard added.
Trolltech develops leading technologies for Linux on the desktop and on mobile devices. The company's Qtopia(R) technology is the most widely-used development environment and user interface for Linux-based products. Today, more than 75 vendors are designing, building or shipping devices built with Qtopia and related Trolltech software for embedded Linux, including Motorola, Sharp, ZTE, and Cellon.
Since 2002, Trolltech has successfully developed strategic and technical partnerships with major mobile manufacturers and OEM/ODMs in China. Already 15 local manufacturers, including Datang Communication, ZTE and Cellon have launched, or will soon be launching their Linux-based mobile devices using Trolltech's embedded technology.
On the occasion, the conference will be webcasted live at http://www.cww.net.cn/twzb/Linux2005. The webcast will also be available in taped segments (with simultaneous English translation) at the same link on November 30. (Just follow the English instructions for download).
