Update on Omnis MySQL Crash
Sunday, 12 December 2004The MySQL server crash that took place over the weekend at Omnis Networks did not bring down the California-based Web host's entire network as originally reported by the Web Host Industry Review.
Gary Chon, executive vice president of Omnis Networks, told theWHIR on Tuesday that the crash, "did not bring down the entire network … [and] did not affect all our customers."
According to vice president of operations James Fromm, only 300 customers, a small percentage of the company's base of 130,000 customers, were affected by the MySQL server crash.
Another MySQL server is currently handling the 300 sites affected by the failure, says Fromm. The failed server is currently being tested and Omnis is working with the manufacturer of the RAID hardware to determine the exact cause of the failure. Fromm said the company has modified the backup procedures it uses to backup its MySQL databases.
Many of the customers affected by the crash lost data when Omnis restored sites from its most recent backup, November 2. The company said another malfunction had stopped its regular backup from taking place.
Omnis has offered customers affected by the crash an apology and a $50 credit. And while customers dissatisfied with the company's response have reportedly been canceling accounts, Chon says the large majority of customers are staying on board. "Over 95 percent of customers who have contacted us are satisfied with our response," Chon says.
Fromm also said that an outage of the company's main site on Sunday was unrelated to the MySQL server error.
"Our data center experienced a loss of power from the local power utility on Sunday morning,” he says. “Our backup generator started and the transfer switch activated to take the load from our data center. The trouble occurred when local power was restored and the transfer switch signaled the generator to stop but failed to switch back to the utility side of the circuit. I was notified immediately by our monitoring system and restored power to the data center and service to the customers within 3 hours. The transfer switch has been repaired and we are presently researching the possibility of replacing the transfer switch with a new model."
