Versora Announces Progression Desktop 2.0 Offering Automated Windows to Linux, Linux to Linux and Windows to Windows

Tuesday, 9 August 2005

Versora announced today Progression Desktop 2.0 which includes new functionality and application support for the automated desktop migration tool.

In addition to the functionality found in Progression Desktop 1.1 (which migrates data, documents, system and user settings from Windows to Linux desktops), Progression Desktop 2.0 supports automated Linux to Linux and Windows to Windows transitional desktop (Windows desktop with Microsoft Office to a Windows desktop with OpenOffice.org/Windows desktop with Microsoft Outlook to a Windows desktop with Thunderbird) migrations. Progression Desktop 2.0 is the only systems management tool available offering such widespread platform support.

Progression Desktop 2.0 also supports migrating to Windows applications running on Linux with products including Wine, Codeweavers and Win4Lin. It allows for peer to peer migration using USB or a crossover cable in addition to a file-based network migration available in Progression Desktop 1.1.

“Progression Desktop 2.0 will save a technician 7 hours of time per computer for a migration”, notes Versora CEO Mike Sheffey. “This version perfectly caters to the SOHO, SMB and enterprise markets at every point in the Linux adoption lifecycle including running open source applications on Windows.”

Progression Desktop 2.0 yields dramatic time and cost savings for desktop migrations via an easy to use “Next-Next-Finished” wizard interface. Migrations can also be fully automated from a command line to allow integration with third party system management tools such as Novell ZENworks or CA Unicenter.

Progression Desktop is distributed under an Enterprise Source License (ESL) which allows the administrator the option of viewing and modifying the source code to meet any of the organization’s specific needs. The ESL also gives the organization control over future development of the code to avoid lock-in to a specific vendor.

“Versora’s desktop migration tool helps customers eliminate tedious, manual migrations that are prone to error,” said Alan Murray, Novell vice president of product management for Resource Management. “Combined with Novell ZENworks, this will serve to ease and increase the transition to mixed desktop environments that include Windows and Linux.”

Progression Desktop 2.0 will be released in Q4 2005. Progression Desktop 1.1 is currently shipping. For product information, visit www.versora.com/products/index.php.
