Wintegra Advances Its Leadership in DSL Aggregation With a New, Fully Integrated and Production Ready Silicon & Software Solution
Tuesday, 4 October 2005Wintegra™, the fabless semiconductor company enabling the next generation of access networks, announced today the availability of its new WinArrow IP-DSLAM processor and software solution. WinArrow devices are software compatible with Wintegra's WinPath devices but are optimized for the IP-DSLAM market. WinArrow processors retain the DSL protocol support available on the WinPath product line but will include enhancements resulting in a performance increase for IP DSLAM applications. Coupled with the performance improvements, the complete solution is optimized to address the cost sensitive DSL market.
Wintegra's WinArrow solution comprises the essential building blocks of IP DSLAMs, the control and datapath processors plus software. The datapath software and control plane stacks are supplied directly from Wintegra, dramatically reducing development cycles. These new devices highly improve the data throughput in ADSL applications as compared with the original WinPath devices. It is possible to achieve data rates of 2 Gbps to support highest-end ADSL/VDSL line cards, based on the latest standards, with densities of up to 96 dual latency ports.
Wintegra's WinArrow offering includes production quality DSL datapath software supporting all of the new IP-DSLAM features required by WT-101, the standard for DSL access nodes, such as VLAN Bridging and Multicast. This software is royalty free and normally used without modification by Wintegra's customers in production systems. Alternatively, customers can add unique features themselves via Wintegra's software development tools. The pace at which Wintegra develops support for new protocols is unmatched in the industry and proves the efficiency of the development tools and programming model. As WinArrow utilizes packet processing engines that are programmable, Wintegra will support enhancements to WT-101 and other standards, as they evolve, with a simple software field upgrade.
To provide a turn-key IP-DSLAM solution, a full Linux based Control Path software package is available, namely the Wintegra Linux Services (WLS). Code modules include STP, TCP/IP, DHCP, IGMP and many others. This has enabled existing customers to offer operational systems to their end customers within three months.
The wide market acceptance of WinPath and WinArrow by IP-DSLAM system manufacturers is based on the blend of full programmability, that allows the addition of new protocols without months of silicon re-design, with complete, production ready data and control path software. This contrasts with some legacy architectures that provide programmability, but leave to the user the extremely complex and time-consuming task of software development. It also contrasts with other legacy architectures that in an attempt to slightly reduce the software development effort, compromise their flexibility by migrating up to 80% of the software functionality to hard-wired, non-programmable logic.
WinArrow devices are capable of supporting ADSL/ADSL2+, SHDSL, and VDSL/VDSL2+ for high throughput IP-DSLAMs. These processors integrate enhanced UTOPIA & POS interfaces with extended addressing capabilities for connections to any DSL PHY and have multiple on-board Gigabit Ethernet interfaces required for IP DSLAMs. WinArrow devices and associated software are shipping today, with further performance enhancements available later this year.
