Friday, 14 January 2005Xybernaut® Corporation (NASDAQ:XYBR - News) today announced that it will co-chair an international consortium focused on next-generation applications of the LINUX operating system (OS).
The overarching mission of the consortium, called the Open Systems Competency Center (OSCC), is to address scientific research on the practical applications in industry for LINUX and Xybernaut will being providing extensive perspective and experience in mobile, wireless and wearable computing to the group and its efforts. Dr. Edwin Vogt, European Director for Xybernaut will co-chair the consortium on behalf of Xybernaut.
"In recent years LINUX has become a preferred OS for application development at the enterprise level - particularly in the areas of multimedia, networking and mobile applications," said Vogt. "As its use becomes more and more pervasive, we believe it is critical for industry leaders to share their ideas and research findings to improve LINUX and the manner in which it is employed by businesses, government entities and even individuals."
Vogt noted that the consortium's efforts will cover a wide variety of application categories such as enterprise applications; software development; hardware solutions, such as mobile/wearable platforms and computing display technologies; privacy and security applications and business process applications.
Though the efforts with the OSCC in Europe are primarily related to research and development, Xybernaut also currently supports LINUX as an operating system option for its Mobile Assistant and Atigo product families. For example, the Atigo LINUX option is an "embedded" version of the LINUX OS that has been optimized specifically for mobile and wireless computing functions. As previously announced, the Xybernaut Atigo LINUX products incorporate various Open Source features such as support for industry standard communications protocols, advanced data management and system configuration features and superior network management capabilities.
Xybernaut Solutions Inc. (XSI), the Company's solution team, also offers LINUX-related services such as system administration, application development, usability factors and training as well as methodologies for incorporating LINUX and non-LINUX-based mobile/wearable computers into an overall enterprise IT strategy.
